You Don’t Need an AI Certification…Here’s What You Actually Need
Growing up in a small town, the only successful people I saw were doctors, lawyers, and engineers. So naturally, I believed that success meant becoming a doctor. I majored in Biology, minored in Organic Chemistry, and was all set to go to med school… until I realized that I would be committing the next 10 years of my life to something I wasn’t genuinely passionate about.
The semester before graduation, while I was applying to medical schools, my mentor asked me a simple but profound question: "Why do you want to be a doctor?" My only answer was, "Because that’s what my family and I dreamed about." Then he pointed out something I had never considered…despite excelling in my science courses, I never lit up when talking about them. But when it came to student government, mentoring, and leadership? That’s where my passion was undeniable. That insight changed my entire career trajectory.
I pivoted into higher education administration and leadership development, earning a Master’s in Higher Education with a focus on Student Development Theory. Years later, a corporate recruiter saw potential in me that I hadn’t seen in myself and urged me to consider a corporate role she was recruiting to fill. I thought I needed an MBA to break into the corporate world. Another limiting belief. I decided to listen to her, leaned into my transferable skills, embraced trial and error, and found myself thriving in a corporate career without a business degree.
This conditioned belief that education is everything and that we have to work twice as hard to succeed is deeply ingrained, especially for many of us from underrepresented backgrounds. But here’s the truth… success isn’t just about degrees—it’s about adaptability.
And now, AI is forcing another mindset shift. You don’t need an AI certification or technical expertise to start using it effectively at work. You just need to start. Let’s break it down.
THIS WEEK’S INSIGHTS:
- AI is eliminating the gatekeeping of expertise… those who use it outperform those who wait to get certified.
- You don’t need to master AI… you need to master how to apply it in your daily work.
- Beginner-friendly AI tools that corporate employees can use right now to increase efficiency and impact.
TRENDS
AI is Democratizing Expertise… Experience No Longer Determines Success
Over 50% of college graduates work in jobs unrelated to their degrees. (WSJ)
What does that tell us? Your ability to adapt and apply knowledge is far more valuable than formal credentials. The same shift is happening with AI.
Companies are prioritizing AI literacy over AI expertise. You don’t need to become an AI engineer… you need to understand how AI can automate tasks, generate insights, and help you work smarter.
Takeaway: The professionals who embrace AI now will have a competitive edge over those waiting for a certification.

Final Thought: AI Is Your New Career Advantage
Think about it… if you could go back and tell your younger self that your college major wouldn’t dictate your career, what advice would you give?
The same applies to AI. You don’t need to be an expert…you just need to start using it.
Stop overthinking, stop trying to master everything, and stop waiting until you feel “ready.” Embrace just-in-time learning and start now.
Remember… AI isn’t here to replace you—it’s here to make you unstoppable. 💪🏽
As mi mamá used to say, "El que no arriesga, no gana." (Translation: “If you don’t take risks, you don’t win.”)
The same applies to AI…don't overthink, dive in, experiment, and watch how it transforms your work.
Hasta la próxima, Abrazos!
