Working Twice as Hard Means Twice as Tired: Using AI to Reclaim Your Energy
I come from a lineage of warriors in heels.
My mom, my tĂas, and my abuela didnât just talk about hard work; they lived it. I was raised with the mantra: âMija, pon la cabeza abajo y trabaja el doble.â (Keep your head down and work twice as hard).
Education was everything. Excellence was expected.
Perfection wasnât celebrated. It was assumed.
And it worked. I climbed. I achieved. I made my family proud.
But eventually, I crossed the line where hard work turned into self-sacrifice.
At 23, I was in graduate school full-time. From 5:00 to 11:00 a.m., I hosted a morning radio show at a top-rated radio station, worked as a graduate assistant until 5:00 p.m., and attended night classes until 9:00 p.m. Then Iâd head home, study, prep for the next morning's show, and start again by 4:00 a.m.
I did that cycle for 18 months straight. No breaks. No breath.
Until my body tapped out before I did, I got sick.
My doctor ordered me to get off the hamster wheel...at least for a couple of weeks.
That was my first lesson in this truth:
You canât heal in the same hustle that burned you out.
Todayâs professionals, especially women and diverse professionals, are still carrying these inherited beliefs that our value is tied to how hard we grind.
But AI is offering us a new way forward. One that honors our ambition without sacrificing our health.
THIS WEEKâS INSIGHTS:
-
Burnout disproportionately impacts women and professionals of color. We are more likely to feel the weight of stress and less likely to receive the support we need to recover.
-
Let go of the belief that your value comes from doing everything. Sustainability is the new success metric.
-
Use AI to defend your calendar, protect your peace, and offload the pressure to perform constantly.
TRENDS
A 2023 Deloitte Women @ Work report found that 53 percent of women say their stress levels are higher than the prior year, and 46 percent report feeling burned out.
A separate 2023 study revealed that 45.3 percent of Hispanic and Latino workers report experiencing burnout in the workplace.
Furthermore, research indicates that diverse professionals are more likely to experience burnout compared to their white colleagues.
This isnât just about having too much on our plates.
Itâs the invisible weight of performing under pressure, navigating the career labyrinth, and often being the only one in the room.
Itâs the emotional tax of constantly needing to prove we belong while holding ourselves to impossible standards.
AI wonât fix systemic barriers overnight. But it gives us leverage.
It helps automate the mental clutter, protect our calendars, and create room for something most of us were never taught to prioritize: rest.
Not rest as a reward but as a radical, strategic leadership tool.
"Burnout isnât just about the workload. Itâs about the silent expectations we inherit, absorb, and internalize until we canât anymore."
